The key to the magic of change !

ALL change is scary. WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???? Awwee come on —-you say—that can’t be true! Oh –then you say-but if the change is positive it won’t be scary–right??? NOPE! EVEN IF THE CHANGE IS POSITIVE AND ONE YOU WANT IT IS  STILL  SCARY-to your brain!  

Yes—this fear of change is rooted in your brain’s physiology–whether you like it or not or whether you want to be scared or not!

Now, the good news is that there IS a way to work with this and get the change you want. YIPPPEE!

Lets start with your brain. You actually have three separate brains. One of the interesting dilemmas in being human is developing harmony among the three brains.

At the bottom of the brain is your brain stem. It is the oldest and is often called the reptilian brain. It wakes you up in the morning and sends you to sleep at night and reminds your heart to beat.

Right on top of the brain stem is your mid brain, also called the mammalian brain. It is the second oldest part of your brain. It regulates your internal temperature,  houses your emotions AND governs your fight or flight response. Your fight or flight response is crucial to your survival and actually keeps you alive in the face of danger. That sounds like a good thing to me -right?

OK–let’s move on. Now the third part of your brain is the cortex and is the newest part of the human brain. It is basically responsible for the miracle of being human. It is where our rational thoughts and creative impulses come from. Whenever we want to make changes or kick start our creative juices we need to access our cortex.

OK, so here’s where is gets interesting. Let’s say for instance you decide to lose 10 pounds and then you find yourself eating a tub of ice scream in one sitting two days later–or–you decide to get up early and exercise every day and three  days later you  are back hitting the snooze alarm. This can be very frustrating especially if you seem to be doing all the right things and the change makes GOOD sense!

WHERE IS THE PROBLEM?

The problem is smack dab right in the middle of your brains–perfectly housed in a place called the amygdala. This houses your fight or flight response. Now remember this is important and is crucial to your survival. Good–right? YES—but not ALL the time.

Here’s the simple truth—the real problem with the amygdala is that is triggers alarm bells WHENEVER we want to make a departure from the usual and safe routines.What that really means is that ANY new challenge or opportunity triggers some level of fear. Yup–when the amygdala is triggered- your access to the thinking part of your brain is restricted and sometimes literally shut down! YIKES!!

Now there are some people who can actually turn their fear into excitement and get around the problem without activating the amygdala– but most of us who set goals or try to initiate a change have a problem with our fear getting triggered-even though we may NOT be aware of it on a conscious level!  THis is why you tend to return to your old usual patterns. It is simply your brain’s way of preventing you from departure from your usual  and safe routines even if it means hitting the snooze alarm or eating a big tub of ice cream!

Now, I know what you are thinking now—SO—– HOW THE HECK CAN I NOT TRIGGER THE AMYGDALA when I want make a change that I want to make?

I have a VERY simple answer and it is so simple that it almost seems like it will not work. TRUST ME—IT DOES!

READY???  TAKE SMALL–VERY VERY VERY SMALL steps towards change. Sometimes such small steps may even feel silly– but–it works!  By doing this you basically rewire your nervous system and bypasse the fight or flight response….and your brain relaxes and says—oh cool…this is nice—let’s keep doing this!

That comfy ole comfort zone

I wonder if as January has ended and February begins that any of you are becoming remotely aware that you MAY be falling into that same old comfort zone regarding some of those goals you set and  have not yet achieved.  Maybe you are finding yourself saying, I’ll do it tomorrow, or I just don’t know what to do or how to do it or how do I even begin anyway?

What if I told you that there was an instantaneous way to get momentum and extend that comfort zone and easily become comfortable with your uncomfortableness?

I don’t know about you..but I love to be comfortable! Many times we STAY where we are because we are uncomfortable making changes and the unknown is daunting. I KNOW!  Have you ever wanted to go swimming and the water was a bit too chilly—yet as you slowly ventured FORWARD the water somehow felt less chilly. Why, you ask? It is simply because you took the risk  and stepped forward and  literally in a few short moments you became comfortable with that which you were uncomfortable with just a few moments earlier.Yes, with each step forward you took you actually expanded your comfort zone to include that which you had previously been uncomfortable with!

Just the other day I finally took action on something new which had been a bit daunting to me. I kept moving this item forward on my to do list for over 2 months. I was uncomfortable and was unsure how to proceed. For me it was the old pattern of “take no action if you don’t know what to do” that crept in. This of course only increased my discomfort every time I looked at my to do list! I finally just decided that I would not end the day without completing this. The funny thing is that completing this brand new thing actually only took me less than an hour and it has opened up a whole new avenue of business for me!

So, what is the one thing that will instantaneously extend your comfort zone??? BEGIN the thing that daunts you….JUST BEGIN ….you do not need to finish it, JUST BEGIN NOW! Although I think that you will be surprised at just how much you accomplish as your comfort zone is extended and your discomfort magically disappears!

As Yoda says in Star Wars, “Do or do not, there is no try.”

The power of DECISION!

Have you ever just been afraid to commit to what you really want? Have you ever wondered if you can really have what you want? Have you ever thought I will just HOPE and maybe “it” will happen? Have you ever wondered if by DECIDING you will open yourself up for disappointment? Have you ever thought that if you were vague enough that the benevolent universe will just deliver exactly what you want?

Have you ever gone into a restaurant and when the server came to your table and asked you what you wanted, you just said …OH whatever….just bring me what you think I might like! Of course not! If only we were as specific and took the time to REALLY be clear on what we want for our lives!

Have fun with it! Just for today DECIDE , be clear and get specific about what you want. Do it with large and small things! The moment you DECIDE, the door is open and you will be amazed at the synchronicity of the universe! It is as if your specific message is received by your unconscious mind and the specific signal goes out and VOILA!!

Come on……take the leap and DECIDE….Be clear and open your doorway to SUCCESS!

Can affirmations really do it?

Have you ever just felt down and had a hard time admitting it because you are not quite sure what to do? Have you ever felt like things are just not going that way you intended? How about those times when you seem to be doing everything right and still no results? What if those affirmations you have been saying are starting to irritate you?

If you have ever felt this way, I have a VERY quick and easy way to shift your feelings immediately!

It is a well known fact that all our programming and ultimate directions come from our unconscious mind. These programs run on automatic pilot and that is why we very often cannot get the change we want merely by speaking it or even deciding to. Long lasting and effective change comes when we work  at the level of our beliefs and our identity.  That is a much longer topic for another time! Now back to how you can feel better immediately!

Most of us have learned about affirmations. An affirmation is basically a specific and positive statement that is stated in the now about something we wish to do or have. For example, I am now 10 poundslighter or I am making 10K more a month in sales now or I am with the love of my life now. Now, here’s where the rub can come in. Even though our unconscious mind is like a five year old  and it responds to simple directions it is also a smart little bugger! What that means is that when you say an affirmation similar to the ones I just mentioned your unconscious mind says, hmmm…..no you’re not, or no you don’t…. not now anyway!

Yikes, that  means that it basically cancels itself out! Well then what do you do? You simply speak the truth and in doing so you get a full on positive response from your unconscious mind and you feel better instantly!

What is the truth you ask? It is simple! Let’s say you want to lose 10 pounds. Instead of saying I am 10 pounds lighter you simply say: won’t it be nice when I am 10 pounds lighter! If you are feeling a bit low and lonely and not exactly sure why, you can just say: won’t it be nice when I feel balanced and happy again. This simple phrase of “won’t it be nice”  or “wouldn’t it be nice” is very powerful and has an immediate positive effect on how we feel. Not to mention that our unconscious mind totally buys it!

My advise to you is to play with it! Have fun and try it out on all sorts of things!  

Won’t it be nice when you can be, do and have what you desire?!!
